SUMMARY

The Challenge

In 2020, the early days of the pandemic had most people stay at home for most part of their days. People were taking to social media more than ever. Posts and stories featured pictures of virtual meetups, newfound pride in culinary achievements, music covers of trending songs, haircuts by family, participation in social media challenges and the face covering as a style statement. I explore these social media trends through a series of GIF animations, illustrated by myself.

A New Way of Life

In more ways than one, new routines had formed for better or for worse. Socialization meant catching up with friends and family over video calls. Family members turned barbers for home haircuts. Cooking became an adventure each day. People tapped into their creative geniuses through music and dance. At the end of the day, you were unlikely to miss these life updates on your social media feed.

Social Media Challenges

Even amidst the general gloom, people were game for social media challenges. Remember the hand emojis flashing across your screen and cool music playing in the background while you had to match those at lightning speed? Dalgona coffee became the internet's favorite drink. Family and friends found new ways to collaborate and offer support through hand made placards with powerful messages. Women nominated fellow women to post black and white selfies, championing the cause of female empowerment.

Corona Weddings

Indian wedding photographers have always been innovating to keep the novelty alive in wedding photography. With the pandemic, face coverings became a style statement - the bride and the bride groom wearing flashy ones matching their ostentatious attire. You already spotted one of these on Instagram for sure!
